How to Install a Toilet Paper Holder in Drywall

We will look at how to install toilet paper holder in drywall, drywall is a hollow type of wall. If you are not drilling into the studwork then cavity wall plugs will be required.

Tools Required

– Spirit Level

– Tape Measure

– Painters Tape

– Scissors

– Screwdriver

– Drill

Step 1 – Preparing the Wall

The first thing you need to do is prepare the wall for the new toilet paper dispenser. If the existing holder is still in place then this will need to be removed. Then check that the replacement toilet paper holder will cover the holes, if not you will need to fill the holes.

Step 2 – Marking the Holes

Most toilet paper dispensers come with helpful paper templates to accurately position the holes. Cut the template out and fix it to your wall, use a spirit level to ensure the holes are in line and the toilet roll holder will be in line.

If there’s no template in the box then you will need to measure out the hole centers yourself.

Step 3 – Drilling the Holes

With the holes accurately marked on the wall, use a drill to make the holes in the wall. You do not need to use a hammer drill to drill into drywall, drill right through the drywall with the right size drill to suit your wall plug. After drilling, remove the template.

Step 4 – Wall Plugs

Insert the wall plug anchors into the wall. Depending on the type of plug you are using, you might need to gently tap these in, otherwise, you may be able to screw them in.

Step 5 – Mounting the Paper Holder

Fit the brackets according to the instructions included with the pack. This is typically a matter of securing the brackets with a couple of screws and then sliding the toilet paper holder over the brackets and sliding the bar inside.

  1. Helpful video, but where is the link on how to repair the old holes in the tiles so that “you can’t see them”?
And if one is tiling the wall, is there a better option for a ‘permanant’ TP holder that won’t go out of style, or info on how to easily prep (block) the wall to handle multiple redrillings?
Ditto with hanging the TP on the side of the vanity cabinet. Many tract homes have cheaply-made cabinets with just thin plywood veneer sides than can not hold wood screws very well, nor redrilling nearby an old hole; the wood just disintegrates.
